<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>An impactful winter storm system is shaping up for the weekend which could snarl travel, even locally, as ice and snow come down. Details are beginning to come into view, but be sure to check back on this system for specific timing and precipitation details. The Weather Prediction Center has highlighted (top of page) portions of the Midwest for heavy snow and areas of the Ozarks and Mid-South for heavy ice. Ice and snow will extend well outside of these areas. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 045956-1735905751731.png">Winter storm watches have been issued from Kansas to the Ohio Valley for a mix of snow and ice, with gusty winds that could top 35 mph. We'll likely see winter alerts issued farther to the east as confidence increases in precipitation types and totals. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 050242-1735905767617.png">Models begin to show ice starting early Saturday in Kansas, but impacts begin to ramp up late Saturday through Sunday, lingering into Monday as well. These models will still fluctuate so timing and precipitation type may still change for your area.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/2025-01-03 05-36-44-1735907835391.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Snow Impacts</h1><p>Some locations could see heavier ice accretions, possibly leading to downed trees and powerlines. Some of the latest modeling has shown a slight northward movement of the snow and ice. Snow looks to be the heaviest along the I-70 corridor from Kansas into Pennsylvania. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 050258-1735905791771.png">A corridor of 6-12 inches of snow is expected in the cold sector, with the highest impacts (heavy snow and blowing snow) expected in similar locations (red color below).<br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 055511-1735909020797.png"></p><h1>Ice Impacts</h1><p>Ice will likely be the heaviest just south of the heavy snow corridor. A stripe of ice between 0.25" and 0.50" is possible a bit south of I-70 through the Ohio River Valley. Areas in the darker color could see bigger impacts, including downed trees and powerlines. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 070950-1735913405857.png">Areas in orange (below) are expected to see the greatest impacts from sleet and freezing rain. <p>Western New York experienced mild weather in December, with little influx of the bitterly cold air that usually triggers lake-effect snowfall. However, as we enter January, cooler air is moving across the lakes. Despite this, the Great Lakes still lack significant ice coverage due to the persistent warmth. As a result, the Northeast is expected to face heavy lake-effect snow this weekend, fueled by strong northwesterly winds.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 054043-1735908090475.png">The cooler arctic air will be back in the forecast headed into the weekend. As arctic air is pulled in around departing low pressure, it will fire up the lake effect machine once again.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 054055-1735908114771.png">The last time portions of New York, Ohio, and Michigan were covered in feet of snow was during Thanksgiving and the following couple of weeks.  Snowfall totals in New York reaching up to 16" within the past 24 hours.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 060503-1735909509496.png">As of right now, more snowfall is on the way for the same areas as the heavy snow bands sit over the same region. Looking at the forecast below and factoring in the fact the Lak Ontario does not have that much ice, this is where the heaviest snowfall will be.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/2025-01-03 06-06-24-1735909633039.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Some areas can get well over two to three feet of snowfall.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 054107-1735908129305.png">Winter weather alerts are now in effect for areas across the Great Lakes, extending inward into northern New England for the next few days. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 054033-1735908140713.png">Keep up with the forecast as we start to hone in on some of the totals and impacts that will come with this latest bout of lake-effect snowfall.</p>

Heavy Lake-Effect Snow Continues into the Weekend

<p>After tornadoes tore through the south last weekend, another round of severe weather is heading to the South on Sunday. A strong low-pressure system developing east of the Rockies will ramp up the threat for organized thunderstorms as it creates ice and snow to the north.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-02 053551-1735821790041.png">As winds become favorable for severe storms on Sunday, warm temperatures will create increasing instability near the lower Mississippi Valley, leading to strong thunderstorm development, likely in the afternoon and evening.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 061155-1735909922032.png">The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) is highlighting areas from near Memphis to Lake Charles in a slight risk (level 2 out of 5), for Sunday.  Houston, Tupelo, and New Orleans are included in the Marginal risk. Stay weather aware this weekend as the threat for tornadoes and damaging winds return to this region.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 061110-1735909938709.png">This area will likely change still over the next few days, so please check back in as we get closer to Sunday to seek more specific timing and hazard details.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/2025-01-03 06-12-53-1735910013181.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Energy will likely build along the cold front with some heavy rain on Sunday before organizing into strong and severe storms later in the day. Some strong storms may be possible overnight into Monday across the Southeast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 061230-1735909958767.png">Heavy rain could create isolated flash flooding, which has been outlined by the WPC on Sunday for the region above. You have time to prepare for this system, so make sure you have a flood and severe weather plan together.</p>

<p>The active pattern in the Northwest and Rockies continues with more waves of energy to produce more rain, snow, and gusty winds from time to time.</p><h1>Coastal and Cascades Impacts</h1><p>Winter weather advisories and warnings are in place from the cascades and eastern foothills (Bend across the Columbia River) down to the Sierra for snow and ice. Mountain ridges and peaks will be looking at snow over a foot!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 063905-1735911570820.png">Along the coast, we will see more heavy rain and that can contribute to some flooding into the weekend. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/1-1735876301164.png">Flooding is possible on Friday from the Sierra into the Trinity-Shasta mountains, up the coast into southern Oregon.</p><h1>Rockies and Inter-mountain West</h1><p>As await the next Pacific cold front, winter alerts are in place for most of Montana with likely more alerts being issued south into the Dakotas and Wyoming. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-03 063911-1735911578857.png">Some locations in Southern Montana could be looking at a few feet of snow into early next week. <p>While 2024 has been warm across much of the country, and several records were tied again in Florida on New Year's Eve (see above), big changes are arriving from the north in the coming days as we enter 2025.</p><p>The Great Lakes will be one of the first regions of the country to feel the bite of colder air, with high temperatures running well below average by the end of the week.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot 2024-12-31 170147-1735689792328.png"></p><p>Although not quite as pronounced initially, the Northeast will also feel temperatures drop into the weekend. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot 2024-12-31 170136-1735689848610.png"> </p><p>A deep upper-level trough will open the door for colder air to move in from the north. <p>Additional snowfall is expected in the southern Sierra Nevada and throughout the mountains of Southern California. Some lucky mountain tops could pile on an additional 1-2' of snow by Wednesday night.
