Karissa is the Director of On-Air Operations at WeatherNation. Karissa grew up loving math and science, but really fell in love with Meteorology while attending the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After two summers of storm chasing in the central plains, she knew that it was the career path for her. Standing in front of a thunderstorm and feeling the cool outflow knock her over was an experience she will never forget. After two years at COD, she transferred to Metropolitan State University of Denver. Karissa graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology. Her high school and college speech and meteorology professors were extremely supportive and pushed her to succeed. Before joining the WeatherNation team, she previously worked as the Morning Meteorologist at KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa and at WMBD-TV in Peoria, IL. She recently was part of a National Edward R. Murrow award winning team for breaking news for their coverage of the EF-4 tornado in Washington, Illinois. In her free time, Karissa enjoys cooking and trying new foods. She is a self proclaimed 'TV Junkie' who can get into just about any show. She is a die hard Chicago sports fan who loves attending professional sporting events.

<p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">Today, meteorologists and research scientists at </span><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://tropical.colostate.edu/forecasting.html"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">Colorado State University (CSU)</span></a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)"> have released their outlook for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Dr. Phil Klotzbach and the Tropical Meteorology Project at CSU are among the first to issue an outlook for the season. Early predictions expect this year's hurricane season to be busier than average. This year they anticipate 17 named storms, 9 of which will become hurricanes and 4 of those are expected to become major hurricanes (CAT 3 or greater).</span></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NpwxsMmHDIU" start="0"></iframe></div><p>Forecast factors that contributed to their above average outlook focus on the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and sea surface temperatures. In the coming months, a transition to ENSO neutral is expected. That usually does not give a strong single for an above or below average season. However, by the end of the summer into early fall (climatological peak of hurricane season), a potential transition to La Nina is forecast. There is not much certainty on the likelihood or intensity of that La Nina transition, though. Nonetheless, an absence of El Nino which traditionally suppresses hurricane activity is enough to warrant an above average forecast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-03 081623-1743689797271.png"></p><p>Sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic remain above average this year. CSU, First 2025 Hurricane Season Forecast Above Average

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>Prolonged heavy rain is expected to continue Thursday, as strong storms and a cold front work across the Lower Mississippi and Ohio Valley. Several frontal waves will work through the area through Sunday, prompting a Flood Watch for a widespread region from Texarkana, TX to Columbus, OH. A <strong>HIGH</strong> risk (level 4/4) has been issued for flooding on Thursday by the Weather Prediction Center (WPC).</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-03 060044-1743681658262.jpg">Impressive rainfall totals and rainfall rates 2/3" per hour at times will cause rivers, creeks, and streams to run swollen. In total expect 10 to 15 inches of rainfall <span style="color: rgb(8, 8, 9)">over parts of the Mid South and Mid Mississippi Valley into western portions of the Ohio Valley through Sunday. </span>Urban flooding will be likely after saturated soils and always remember, <strong>Turn Around, Don't Drown.</strong> <span style="color: rgb(31, 31, 31)">Over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood waters.</span></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-03 060129-1743681696791.jpg"></p><h2>Thursday</h2><p>The Weather Prediction Center has upgraded Thursday's risk to <strong>HIGH</strong>, a level 4 out of 4 risk for flooding. Per the WPC, potentially "catastrophic" flooding is possible in western Kentucky and Missouri.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-03 060833-1743682124004.jpg">Here's a closer look at some of the cities included in the highest risk for flooding.</p><h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-03 060215-1743682110066.jpg">Friday</h1><p>Friday's Outlook is also a higher-end MODERATE outlook, and some localized spots could be upgraded to a high risk. Now the rainfall will continue to be high in the same areas that have picked up 2-6" of rain in the last 48-hour period. How very Colorado.<br><br>Several waves of low pressure continue to move through the Mountain West after delivering feet of snow to California's Sierra Nevada earlier this week.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-03 091813-1743693578541.png"></p><p>The snow pack is in solid shape heading into April with the northern Sierra faring better than the southern Sierra, but overall a solid winter to recharge state reservoirs. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-03 091822-1743693828839.png"></p><h1>Snow Moves East</h1><p>Additional waves of energy will slide through Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico through Saturday, with rain and snow showers in the forecast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-03 093209-1743694378807.png"></p><h2>Forecast Timing:</h2><p>Snow is expected to cause travel issues in Southern Utah and Colorado from Thursday into Friday, with heavy snow building in SE CO and NE NM late Friday into Saturday. <h1>WEDNESDAY</h1><p>Another round of storms tore through the southern plains early Wednesday morning as a cold front slid east. A few Confirmed Tornado Warnings were issued, as damage pictures came in at daybreak. Owosso, just north of Tulsa, received quite a bit of damage from those early morning storms:</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/VON_040225_RSC_OWASSO,OK_EITHER TORNADO OR STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE EARLY WED MORNING_STORYFUL_DO_E040225-1743611320459.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>SUNDAY - MONDAY</h1><p>Powerful storms raced through the Midwest and down to the Gulf Coast coming out of this weekend. Sunday afternoon into Monday morning, a strong line of storms spurred numerous Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and quite a few Tornado Warnings. Those storms produced hundreds of reports of damage, with a few tornadoes touching down.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-01 055103-1743508412691.jpg">One of those was early Monday morning as a segment of the line started to spin in southern Mississippi. Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<p><strong>NORTHERN U.S. </strong>- <strong>Winter Weather</strong> continue across portions of North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Minnesota as an upper-level low brings severe weather on the "warm side" and snowy and blizzard-like weather on the "cold side". There is even a ice warning issued in southeastern South Dakota, where ice accumulations up to one tenth of an inch.</p><p>Heavy snow, upwards of 6-12", is likely in these areas, but with temperatures right around freezing, rainfall may disturb some of these forecast totals.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-02 085818-1743605907516.png">Totals have already exceeded 6" in some areas over the last 2 days.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-02 085856-1743605940887.png">Ice and sleet also remain in the forecast. Watch for slick conditions over bridges and overpasses.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-02 085823-1743605912985.png"></p><p>Looking at the forecast timing, as it warms throughout the day, snowy areas turn to rain, and as night falls, rain turns back to snowfall. Late Season Snow for the Plains and Midwest

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

<p>All modes of severe weather were seen Monday across the south, southeast, and northeast. Multiple tornadoes were confirmed in Mississippi and Georgia. Marion County, MS, confirmed an EF2 tornado that occurred this morning at 6:10 am. The path length of this tornado was 7.4 miles, with peak winds of 135 mph. The National Weather Service will continue to survey damage over the next few days, as this system moves offshore overnight, but more rounds of severe weather are expected this week.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/multiple confirieed-1743470014932.png"></p><h1>Severe Weather Outlook</h1><p>After another busy day, the severe threat has dropped to a general thunderstorm risk for most of the south.
