<p>The severe weather threat seems never-ending in the Deep South and more storms are likely into Friday. The weather comes in two batches: the first is during the day today as severe weather leftover from Wednesday night drops out of Tennessee. The tornado threat is elevated with this first cluster of storms and a <strong>TORNADO WATCH</strong> is in effect through the evening. A second round of storms comes from the west along the cold front <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/tornado-threat-over-texas-thursday"><strong><em><u>overnight from storms in Texas</u></em></strong></a>.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/se tor-1715275035002.jpg">A complex of storms in north Georgia, upstate South Carolina, and northern Alabama is moving southeast, packing a punch of strong winds (gusts over 60 mph) and embedded tornadoes. By the afternoon it will be closing in on the southeast coast of Georgia and South Carolina with a few storms stretching back into south Alabama.</p><p>Storm development over Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana moves across the I-20 corridor late Thursday night into Friday morning. Hurricane-force winds will be possible with this complex, especially between I-20 and I-10 in Mississippi and Alabama including Jackson, Montgomery, Columbus, and Dothan. If you live in Alabama, Georgia, or Mississippi please have multiple ways to get alerts before you go to bed. On Friday the complex will push offshore with more storms moving closer to the I-10 corridor before finally moving offshore late afternoon.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 11-45-08-1715276760696.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>As a result of the multiple rounds of severe storms, the Storm Prediction Center has issued an <strong>ENHANCED</strong> risk on Thursday through the Deep South. Wherever there is <strong>RED</strong> is the opportunity to see 60+ mph wind gusts with both rounds of storms. We likely see wind gusts over 75 mph with the overnight storms Thursday into Friday for central -southern Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia for the areas under the black "hatch".</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/se wind-1715275076965.jpg"></p><p>To account for the severe weather potential in the form of damaging winds and tornadoes, there is a SLIGHT risk out from the SPC for Friday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc fri-1715251491294.jpg"></p>

Hurricane-Force Wind, Tornadoes in the Deep South

<p>A slow-moving cold front will hit moist, unstable air over the Gulf Coast states prompting an <strong>ENHANCED</strong> risk over central Texas for the entire I-35 corridor on Thursday. Individual supercells develop with strong updrafts that can rotate and produce tornadoes. This is the most populated area in Texas under a large hail and tornado risk - try to park your car under cover and have multiple ways to get alerts.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/tx enhanced-1715252072518.jpg">In the afternoon and evening, a cold front will aid new storm cells along the I-35 corridor of Texas through southern Oklahoma. These storms form into a cluster, moving into central Louisiana and Mississippi with damaging winds and embedded tornadoes. While storms are individual they will contain a damaging hail threat, but once they group the threat shifts to hurricane-force winds between I-10 and I-20.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 04-54-59-1715252130012.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>The lethargic frontal boundary will set up further south on Thursday, focusing more showers and thunderstorms from Texas to Georgia. With eastern Texas and western Louisiana getting drenched over the past few weeks, flash flooding will be easier to find in that part of the Deep South.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/saturated-1715198614916.jpg">A <strong>SLIGHT</strong> RISK has been issued (below) from Shreveport to far western Alabama, with 2-3" of rain and locally higher amounts possible on Thursday with the flood threat continuing in the Southeast Friday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/rainfall outlok-1715252046239.jpg"></p>

<p>This weekend will be wet and cool in the Northeast thanks to a weak clipper that will slide through the Great Lakes and into the Northeast on Friday and Saturday. There is enough moisture to support a few rain showers and certainly cloud cover which will keep temperatures on the cooler side.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 08-34-51-1715266248443.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Highs could be at record cool levels - only in the 50s along the Jersey shore. It will feel more like March than May this weekend! We hope you haven't put away your warmer gear yet.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/temps-1715266454199.jpg">A few stronger storms are possible in Wisconsin and Minnesota with severe weather potential. The primary threat will be damaging winds and hail. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/severe gl-1715276611162.jpg">Rain showers won't be anything to write home about but more of a nuisance for many cities in the Great Lakes Friday afternoon and evening and in the Northeast throughout the weekend. We won't see widespread heavy rain, but the focus for more consistent rain will be in western NY, PA, and New Jersey. Accumulations will be on the order of 1-2" for central Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. These areas are generally saturated after recent storms so the flood risk for rivers, creeks, and streams will be elevated.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 08-35-23-1715266351275.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

<p>The town of Barnsdall, OK took a direct hit from a confirmed tornado in the evening hours. Sights like this are truly heartbreaking, and unfortunately, daylight brought more images of destruction in Barnsdall, roughly 40 miles north of Tulsa. Initial surveys from the National Weather Service office in Tulsa, confirm<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://twitter.com/NWStulsa/status/1787953782485381377?t=zcmnAmqzx1omBhEkB3hh1Q&amp;s=19"><strong><em><u> EF-4 tornado damage</u></em></strong></a> in the town with much of the area seeing EF-3. The storm was on the ground for 39 miles from Barnsdall to Bartlesville. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1787822187518292269" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1787822187518292269"></div><p>A tornado emergency was issued as the storm was moving through the town, which is the highest level of tornado warning that the National Weather Service can issue. Sadly, one person was killed by this storm. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1787675654689104015" src="https://twitter.com/NWStornado/status/1787675654689104015"></div><p>Our field crews were some of the first on the scene in the town to help people escape from their collapsed homes. This is the second EF-4 tornado to hit Oklahoma in less than 2 weeks - <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/more-destructive-tornadoes-touch-down-in-oklahoma"><strong><em><u>an EF-4 touched down in a tornado outbreak April 27-28</u></em></strong></a> hitting the town of Marietta, OK closer to Oklahoma City. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1787707820143419707" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1787707820143419707"></div><p>The Storm Prediction Center issued a <strong>HIGH</strong> risk for severe weather on Monday. The risk is the highest threat level the severe weather outlook goes up to (level 5 out of 5). The last time a storm threat of this magnitude was issued was on March 31, 2023. It covered much of the I-35 corridor including Oklahoma City and Guthrie. Later in the evening, it was expanded east to include the Tulsa metro.</p><p>Related article: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/monday-severe-weather-threat-hits-the-plains-again"><strong><em><u>Severe Storms Push East through Thursday</u></em></strong></a></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot20240506161335png-1715033619658.png">Storms had incredible structure over the Plains on Monday night, fueled by large amounts of energy, spin in the atmosphere and ample moisture.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1787650470951231545" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1787650470951231545"></div><p>The severe storm reports from Monday primarily came out of Kansas and Oklahoma. It lined up very well with where the high risk was issued between the two states. Most of the reports were from large to giant hailstones and strong, damaging winds showing up in the yellow and blue dots below. A few tornadoes touched down in the Plains, indicated by the reports in the red dots.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/svr high-1715094628616.jpg">Hailstones the size of SOFTBALLS fell in Moonlight, Kansas on Monday. We didn't stop there though, even Canton, OK, and Riley, KS had to deal with baseball-sized hail from some of the supercells that formed in the second half of the day.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/hail reports-1715094628614.jpg"> Please continue to stay weather-aware as the severe threat doesn't disappear, it pushes to the east.</p>

EF-4 Tornado Hit Oklahoma Monday, May 6

<p>The snow has been falling in the Northwest with nearly two feet of snow already fallen in Wyoming and over a foot for much of Montana!</p><div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/WeatherNation/videos/1261262411517962" data-width="500" src="https://www.facebook.com/WeatherNation/videos/1261262411517962" style="display: flex; justify-content: center"></div><p>The snow is starting to slide back to the south and west as our area of low pressure responsible for the wet weather moves into the Rockies and Four Corners. The low breaks off from the normal flow and shifts southwest, away from the typical jet stream flow. This low will then sit and spin over the 4 Corners region through the weekend, bringing more gusty wind but a bit more moisture to the atmosphere too. Even if you don't see showers we anticipate a bit more cloud cover through the end of the week and the start of the weekend, which should help to quell the worst of our fire danger.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-08 08-51-01-1715179957991.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Colder air at the highest elevations will produce snowfall in the Rockies of Colorado and the ranges of Wyoming. As low-pressure regresses (moves back to the west), the snowfall spreads south into northern New Mexico, the ranges of Utah, and even northern Arizona. Showers and snow showers are possible through the weekend, especially in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. This is thanks to a "backdoor cold front" meaning it arrives from the east, rather than the typical west. It will also stir up strong winds along the Front Range of Colorado and New Mexico Thursday night into Friday. Pop-up storms will be the focus for the Eastern Plains of Colorado, New Mexico, and west Texas through Monday morning before our low-pressure system gets a kick to the east.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 08-12-52-1715264042373.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Rough estimates show the heaviest of the snowfall in the Rockies of Colorado and the Sangre de Cristo range into northern New Mexico. Rainfall will be on the order of 1" in isolated pockets. Most won't see snow unless they live above 8,000' where there are winter weather advisories in effect across Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/new snow -1715263915920.jpg"></p><p>If it feels like snow is falling late into the season, you may be surprised to know that the season's last snow for many West Coast communities lingers into May and for the highest elevations, even into June!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/est avg snowfall-1714510694011.jpg">Stay with WeatherNation for the latest on the western forecast this week, or get your Western regional forecast at 50 past every hour!</p>

Late Season Snowfall Continues Out West

<p>The primary concern from Wednesday's storms was damaging winds and tornadoes, unfortunately, both of which occurred over the populated mid-South, hitting the southern St. Louis suburbs and communities both north and south of Nashville. Multiple, confirmed tornadoes hit the mid-South on Wednesday creating widespread damage and destruction. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788392193054400999" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788392193054400999"></div><p>There was a tornado emergency issued along I-65 south of Nashville for the tornado seen at the top of the page. The county declared it a "mass casualty" event following the storm meaning that massive amounts of resources were needed to rescue people from trapped and collapsed buildings. Our field crews were on the scene soon after the storm showing roofs ripped off homes and major trees collapsed. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788380868438081823" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788380868438081823"></div><p>Earlier in the afternoon, Clarksville, TN was hit by multiple tornadoes. This area of Tennesee is still recovering from an EF-3 that killed nine in December of 2023, less than 3 months ago. The tornado that hit the south side of the city just before 4 PM on Wednesday was responsible for additional damage in communities north of Nashville.  </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788403520871526644" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788403520871526644"></div><p>There was an elevated threat of tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds. The "significant" severe threat included Nashville, Huntsville, Jonesboro and Fort Smith for EF-2 or stronger tornadoes. Late Wednesday night the city of Huntsville, AL was at threat of multiple tornadoes, just minutes apart. We are waiting to hear more about damage in the northern Alabama city. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788407951226438034" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788407951226438034"></div><p>Not only was severe weather a threat but also flash flooding - the weather balloon launch in Nashville on Wednesday showed about twice as much moisture throughout the atmosphere vs normal (about 1.5" of precipitable water). With a few rounds of storms over some of the same locations, grounds became saturated with upwards of 4" of rain in 24 hours. A flash flood emergency was issued in Springfield, TN along the Kentucky border due to the fast water rise. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788524315740082492" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788524315740082492"></div><p>Wednesday was another extremely active severe weather day with multiple confirmed tornadoes spread across the Midwest and Midsouth. There was a <strong>MODERATE</strong> risk from the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) which is a level 4 out of 5 threat. <p>Preliminary data from the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) suggests that April 2024 was the second-highest tornado count on record. This surpasses the average number of April tornadoes which stands at 182 touchdowns across the country for the month. The year 2011 holds the record of 757 tornadoes in April alone, and I am not the only one who is thankful we didn't see nearly that many.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/April Tor Comp-1714921143566.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>While many of these tornadic storms across the Great Plains may have been photogenic, they are responsible for excessive damage strewn across states like Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas.</p><p>On average, Mississippi, Alabama, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas see the most tornadoes in April. Last month hit Nebraska and Iowa hard, which is not the norm this time of year.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-02-25 110543-1714921317847.jpg"></p><p>May is known to bring the most tornadoes we see each year. Considering how active April was, it will be interesting to see how the upcoming month turns out. April Brought 300 Tornadoes, Second-Most On Record

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>Snow piled up in the Rocky Mountains this weekend, with over two feet of snow reported in parts of Colorado! Even the Denver metro area saw accumulating snow Saturday morning.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1784356854233178450" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1784356854233178450"></div><p><br>Many mountainous areas from the Cascades to the Rockies reported heavy snow from mid-week into the weekend, with the Front Range of Colorado reported the highest totals thus far.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Screenshot 2024-04-28 062758-1714307296262.png">Moisture lingering behind the trough and afternoon heating will lead to a few more pop-up rain and snow showers on Sunday. Winter alerts are in effect for SE Wyoming's Snowy Range, where several inches of snow and gusty winds are expected.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/forecast-1714319083449.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Additional snowfall is only expected to top a few inches on Sunday but could create travel issues on mountain passes, including on I-70 and I-80.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/snow accumulation-1714319142786.jpg">Snow this late in the season is not unusual in the Colorado Rockies. In fact, even more snow is possible toward the end of the computing workweek. Denver has recorded measurable snow into late May - with mountain snow chances lingering even longer. This is great news for the handful of ski resorts that remain open, and hope to extend their season even further.</p>
