Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. It has been a wild start to the month, and the weather pattern isn't letting up. We saw severe storms on Monday across some areas that were hit hard at the beginning of April. Hailstones from 1.75" to 3.00" were reported from West Virginia to Ohio. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-15 122707-1744741633603.png">Through tonight, the Storm Prediction Center has highlighted a MARGINAL risk (level 1 out of 5) for severe storms in portions of the northeast. The main threat for these areas is isolated wind damage.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-15 122855-1744741755302.png">In addition to storms, behind this front temperatures drop cool enough to support some snow flurries. There are a few winter weather advisories that linger into Wednesday for a quick inch or two of snow and wind gusts upwards of 35 mph. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-15 122431-1744741800631.png">The timing of the storm threat looks to be highest during the rest of the afternoon and early evening. As temperatures drop tonight, a few lake enhanced snow showers come off of Lake Superior and Lake Ontario.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/04-15 bams-1744741846380.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The good news is that this system will move through quickly, as a mid-level jet drives fast-moving storms. Rainfall totals will stay on the lighter side, so additional river flooding will not be expected. Spring Storms and Snow for the Northeast

Storms roared through Ohio and West Virginia on Monday to start the week, giving us a taste of what to expect towards the middle of the week.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-15 063321-1744720495042.jpg">SETUP</h1>An area of low pressure will develop in the Upper Midwest toward the middle of this week. That will drive home a pair of opportunities for storms to pop up: Wednesday and Thursday.<h1>WEDNESDAY</h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-15 121140-1744741002918.png">This batch will be primarily driven by the warm front. Often, when we're waiting on a warm front to drive up storms, it takes some time. Storms may not start to pose a threat of large hail or damaging winds until well after midnight:<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/04-15 bams wed-1744741010746.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video> During the day, we're waiting on a dry line to fire storms, which might not have the kick to do it, according to some of the latest model runs.<h1>THURSDAY</h1>Better quality of ingredients will come together, with a more reliable spark: the cold front.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/2025-04-15 07-00-26-1744722113515.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>More instability could put the better spark to use and fire up more storms on Thursday, but again could be well after sunset. That usually complicates matters - if storms favor the overnight hours, often a thin stable layer can develop near the surface. That pushes storms higher in the atmosphere, significantly limiting the tornado threat.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-15 070423-1744722281165.jpg">If storms come together more toward the afternoon/evening timeframe, they would pose a significant threat, given the ingredients in play. Thursday is a "wait and see" forecast for now: more details will be coming throughout the day.

Severe Chances Return Wednesday and Thursday

A lot of fun activities are taking place this weekend! Unfortunately, those might get interrupted by a multi-day severe weather outbreak around portions of the Midwest and Southern Plains. Any day from Friday onward will feature a severe weather threat.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-15 071107-1744722676808.jpg">A similar setup to start the month will occur again later this week. A stubborn trough will keep many locations primed for daily severe weather chances. Details this far out are about as clear as mud, with each round somewhat dependent on the previous round. It's hard to see the fifth domino in a line when four others are in the way.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-15 123844-1744742397111.png">That being said, Sunday appears to have the look of another active day. When we think of typical severe weather outbreak days, it won't come with a steady atmosphere- something needs to be moving. The trough responsible for multiple rounds of storms will get a move on Sunday, which is normally the crescendo during these long weeks.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-15 071734-1744723065173.jpg">When we're still this far out, it's better to frame severe chances in a know vs. don't know picture. Storm chances on Wednesday and Thursday are uncertain themselves, so it's that much tougher to know what will happen this weekend. What is becoming more and more apparent? Anytime the breeze kicks up in the desert southwest, the fire threat will accompany it. Dry Southwest Keeps Fire Concerns Close By

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

Rain has finally fallen in southern California!
