Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. According to climatology, about 10% of the seasonal energy is left for hurricane season now that we're in late October. Seasonal energy is measured by accumulated cyclone energy, also known as ACE. According to<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/outlooks/hurricane2003/August/background_information.html#:~:text=The%20measure%20of%20overall%20activity,at%20least%20tropical%20storm%20strength."> NOAA</a>, ACE is essentially a "wind energy index" and based on that, the season can be defined as extremely active, above-average, near-average, and below-normal. In the Atlantic, the storms this season have brought us to an ACE value of 144, which is considered to be above average.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 061936-1729599583974.jpg">The forecast for the season called for above-average activity as well. Tropical storm conditions are expected through Tuesday for portions of the Bahamas which have been put under tropical storm warnings now. Rainfall amounts of 3-5 inches with isolated totals up to 8" are possible in the Bahamas and storm totals for Cuba could reach 20".<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 061524-1729599452838.jpg"><h1>Eastern Pacific</h1>Tropical Storm Kristy formed on Monday afternoon. Kristy will continue to move in a more favorable environment and likely strengthen into a hurricane.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 110207-1729616537325.jpg"> The NHC has Kristy becoming a hurricane on Tuesday and strengthening as far as a major, category 3 later this week. Tropical Outlook: Oscar Makes Landfall in Cuba, Kristy Forms in Pacific

We have had a warm October for much of the lower 48, and the record heat continues with a ridge of high pressure out across most of the Central and Eastern U.S.! <h2>Midwest</h2>Multiple record highs were set Monday in Michigan. Alpena saw a record high of 84°, beating out the previous record of 78°.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/MICHIGAN GGGGGG-1729558442924.png">A cold front will move across the northern U.S., bringing temperatures back to more seasonable levels by mid-week for the Northern Plains. The Twin Cities will feel a 20° temperature swing in 24 hours.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-21 135638-1729540603118.png">Northeast</h2>Similar to the Midwest, the Northeast will feel the cooldown by Thursday. Until the cooler air arrives, widespread warmth was felt across the area including several spots across New York City.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 073611-1729604187718.jpg">After Wednesday, temperatures look like they'll back off through this weekend, so this won't be a long-lived warm stretch. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 073730-1729604290680.jpg"><h2>South</h2>This is where the warmer weather could linger for a lot longer. The upper-level pattern will keep the warm weather nearby for the foreseeable future. It was a soggy stretch across Oregon and Washington this past weekend and Monday, as some areas of Washington picked up 2-3 inches of rainfall, wetting down any chance to get outdoors. Tuesday, looks to dry out across the northwestern U.S. as we anticipate our next rain chances to move back in on Wednesday. Rain will start for Oregon on Wednesday and as a frontal boundary forms,<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/10-21_rnw_bams18z-1729566499615.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Rainfall and snowfall totals from now through Wednesday night do not look overly impressive, which is why there are currently no winter weather alerts in place for Idaho, Oregon, or Montana.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-21 210924-1729566619586.jpg">Later this week and into the weekend, the pattern stays active, with a few more waves moving onshore. It's never too early to start thinking about the forecast as we get closer and closer to Halloween. Some might even be out celebrating early or wrapping up the finishing touches on the costume. That's where we come in - we're keeping an eye on where you might need the rain jacket when you hop on the broom and how cool it'll be when you emerge from the coffin. Right now, it looks like many will manage to stay dry this weekend, if you're heading to any pumpkin patches or corn mazes.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/2024-10-22 07-52-06-1729605193228.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Highs moving into Saturday will be above average for many, but you will still need the flannel after the sun sets. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 075115-1729615693897.jpg">It might be a bit too early to tell where the wet weather will be scaring some trick-or-treating plans, but climatology can be a good first guess in some years. One of the national centers, the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), takes the lead in presenting these seasonal outlooks. Officials at NOAA's CPC say La Niña is one of the key factors for this upcoming weekend. The agency expects the winter weather pattern to evolve through February and even March.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-17 110044-1729185345413.png">At the top of this article, you'll find the temperature outlook for the mainland U.S. The Southwest, Deep South, Southeast, and East Coast are expected to have a mild winter, while the northern High Plains and Pacific Northwest are expected to have a cooler winter. The precipitation outlook follows the same general pattern, with some wetter weather possible in the Upper Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Great Lakes.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/LA NINA MOVIE LYNX-1729185478917.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>CPC expects La Niña to develop throughout the winter months, which typically leads to a more northerly storm track, leaving the southern tier of the country warmer and drier. As a result, widespread relief from drought does not appear likely across the South.&nbsp;With this pattern, there is a snowy potential across parts of the Upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest. NOAA'S Winter Outlook Released

The same system that brought heart-breaking flooding to New Mexico has been pushing east on Monday after sitting and spinning on top of the Four Corners all weekend.Related Story: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/storm-and-snow-chances-rise-across-new-mexico">Historic Rain Falls in New Mexico</a>The Storm Prediction Center continues to issue a marginal risk overnight for portions of Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. As a trough of low pressure moves through, a few storms will stick around tonight and can be strong to severe. By tomorrow morning, things will be much calmer for your Tuesday morning.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/lojoj-1729558891357.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Thankfully, rainfall amounts don't look to overwhelm the dry soils in Kansas or Oklahoma, where any of this rainfall is sorely needed. Overnight Severe Threat in the Plains

The slow-moving upper-level low is still spinning in the Rocky Mountains Monday morning, spinning through lingering snow chances. This system brought plenty of snow to the Four Corners, with some areas picking up 7-8 inches over the weekend. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-21 071644-1729516615712.jpg">As the snow continues to fall, portions of the I-70 corridor could become slick. Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/meteors-meteorites/perseids/">best meteor shower of the year</a> is expected to peak this weekend! The Perseid meteor shower often producers high numbers of meteors and coincides with warm to mild temperatures, making it one of the most satisfying to take in.2024 shouldn't be an exception as the waxing crescent moon will set early enough to allow for excellent conditions.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot 2024-08-10 113148-1723311247808.png">The peak this year is expected Sunday night into Monday morning, with the best conditions before sunrise on Monday the 12th. Over 50 meteors an hour could be visible under ideal conditions. To reach ideal conditions, find a place far from city lights (light pollution) and give yourself plenty of time to watch. It typically takes 15-20 minutes for eyes to fully adjust to the darkness. Meteors will appear to originate in the Northeast, near the constellation Perseus (hence the name), but try to watch as much of the sky as possible. Bring a lawn chair and some refreshments to make yourself comfortable (bug spray too!).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot 2024-08-10 105518-1723308964726.png">Cloud cover may be an issue for some areas in the Midwest, but the South and West Coast look favorable for clear skies.
