Drought has led to increased fire dangers for parts of the Northeast over the past weeks, but now it looks like rain and snow will return to improve the situation!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/1-1732249274063.png">A system moved through prior but only brought limited rain. However, a cold front and a series of lows move across the region Thursday and into the weekend. This system will bring more widespread rain and snow.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/1-1732249347211.png">The Appalachian Mountains and across the New York/Pennsylvania border will be the best bet for seeing enough snow to impact travel. Winter alerts have been issued from the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee north into western New York.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/1-1732249418253.png"><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/Baron 2-1732249487242.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Temperatures will take a dive as this system rolls through. Snow to End Dry Spell in the Northeast

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Winds in the Pacific Northwest have been howling thanks to a bomb cyclone. Over 200,000 customers were without power as of Thursday evening, mostly around the King County area. Another round of strong winds and rain will arrive Friday thanks to a second low (image below), that may also have the chance to go through bombogenesis (rapid strengthening). Thankfully, this next system isn't expected to be nearly as strong as the first, but it will still be impactful.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/Screenshot 2024-11-21 062112-1732195278980.png">Temperatures are expected to warm slightly on Thursday as a warm front ushers in southerly winds. Eventually, temperatures will drop behind the following cold front Friday into Saturday, which will drop snow levels once again. As a result, new winter alerts have been issued in parts of Montana and Idaho.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/1-1732248754960.png">Winds aren't expected to be as strong as with the previous round, but with trees and branches already damaged, additional power outages are possible. The low will gradually push inland into Saturday, helping to bring down snow levels as the cold front arrives, in addition to sending rain and snow east across the Northern Rockies.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/Baron 2-1732248892431.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Additional snow is expected to be heavy from Friday into Saturday, with a foot or more along the higher peaks.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/1-1732248942589.png">Heavy rainfall is also still possible. Most folks will see an additional 1"-2" but localized heavy rain of 5+" will be possible near the coast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/1-1732249038077.png">You can always check your West Regional Forecast at :50 past the hour.

High Winds Knock Out Power in Washington, Storm Train Continues

An intense mid-latitude cyclone has been aiming for the West Coast of the United States this week, ushering a strong atmospheric river into Oregon and California. This low-pressure system underwent bombogenesis, or it "bombed out," a term reserved for low-pressure systems that intensify rapidly, typically with a pressure drop of at least 24mb in 24 hours. This definition changes based on latitude. This storm system more than doubled that pressure drop, going from over 1000 mb to about 945 mb in 24 hours! This intense storm system is expected to continue to bring major impacts to areas of the Northwest and northern California with heavy rain, strong winds, and big swells.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/Screenshot 2024-11-21 120812-1732216096621.png">This strong low-pressure system is tapping into moisture from the tropics, pulling intense rain and snow into northern California. This has led to the likelihood of flash flooding in northern California on Thursday, with the elevated risk continuing across the northern Sierra on Friday. Warm temperatures will keep precipitation falling largely as rain below 6,000-7,000 ft before the cold front arrives on Friday to drop snow levels back to around 4,500 feet into Saturday morning.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/Baron 2-1732248039967.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>A large region is under a moderate risk for excessive rain on Thursday, with a HIGH RISK for locations along the 101 from Fort Bragg through Eureka. A moderate risk will continue Friday before the threat drops to marginal (level 1) for the Sierra foothills on Saturday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/Baron 2-1732248267713.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Rainfall is expected to be heavy through Thursday, with rainfall totals possibly surpassing a foot or more in Southern Oregon and Northern California. Flooding, including river flooding and flash flooding, is likely in these areas. If you live in a low-lying area that can flood, be ready to leave if flash flood warnings are issued.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/1-1732248355312.png">Areas along the coast could also see strong enough winds to down trees and power lines. AAA is expecting a record number of travelers this year, a number they haven't seen since before the pandemic.Most travelers will hit the road compared to flying.<img src="https://newsroom.aaa.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Press-Release-Chart-1024x651.png">With millions hitting the roads, traffic will be hard to avoid, no matter where you are heading. However, there will be some better times to do your traveling. Record Travel Numbers Expected This Thanksgiving

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

<h1>WHAT TO EXPECT</h1>An area of low pressure that brought severe storms earlier in the week will now dip back down to the south and continue to bring snow and rain across portions of the northern plains and the midwest. This system has brought between 6 and 12 inches in the Dakotas in the last 24 hours. This low is moving south and the snow chances will follow it! Things will get busy as this low will combine with another low coming out of Canada. Snow will continue to spread through Michigan and Wisconsin tonight and into Thursday as it works south and east.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/OVEJFKFL-1732152287574.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Winter weather advisories (purple) have been issued for South Dakota, a small portion of Minnesota, and Western Wisconsin. 1-3 inches of additional snow will be possible, (with localized heavier amounts). Another impact we have been seeing is wind gusts, gusts can reach up to 50 mph through tomorrow morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/WINT-1732152343874.png">Once this system moves to the east, drier conditions will be in place. Soaking Rain then Snow for the Northern Plains

What's leftover of the moisture from (what was) Sara has drifted across the Gulf of Mexico. That will meet up with a frontal boundary that is sliding east across the I-10 towards the middle of this week. Though we saw a chance of strong storms early on in the day, we have lost a lot of instability for the southeast, and therefore the Storm Prediction Center has downgraded the severe threat. The severe threat has been dropped, and we now see a general risk of thunderstorms today through the southeast. Heavy rainfall will still be a concern for this portion of the country.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/generl-1732049532101.png">As the frontal boundary moves to the east, heavy rainfall can be embedded within some of the storms. On top of already saturated soils, an additional 2 to 3 inches could overwhelm the grounds. A digging trough from the northwest will work through California to increase snow chances for the Sierra. Winter Weather Advisories have now been issued for the high country for up to a foot of snow. The winds will be strong along with the snow chances, and travel could be difficult along some mountain passes. More winter alerts could be added to this map as the event unfolds.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/11/Screenshot 2024-11-15 081841-1731683953697.png">Throughout Thursday, the precipitation will start to increase from north to south. On Friday as the cutoff low lingers, more rain and snow is likely across the Sierra spilling over into Nevada and Utah. Latest information from electric utilities from across North Carolina and South Carolina show that power outages for customers are above 800,000, as of 8 AM EDT. At one point, power outages exceeded 900,000 customers

Duke Energy, one of the largest North Carolina utilities, is reporting close to 488,693 customer outages.
