The threat of wintry weather is moving in. Hard to imagine given where temperatures got to Monday afternoon. Freezing rain is notoriously difficult to both deal with and forecast. Let's go over what to expect with this time around from Missouri to Maryland. <h1>SETUP</h1>The jet stream is HUMMING over us! That keeps a steady supply of disturbances nearby. We're expecting one to fire through late Tuesday night into Wednesday, which will spark the start of a dreaded Colorado Low. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-04 070604-1738677971832.jpg">As this low develops, it will throw moisture into cooler temperatures. Since temperatures will still be warm in the upper atmosphere, melting is expected to occur, which means anywhere at or below freezing those raindrops could freeze on contact. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-04 070851-1738678353894.jpg">It's all going to depend on what the temperatures are when the light rain begins to fall. <h1>UNCERTAINTY</h1>We've been bouncing back and forth between a stronger, further north solution and a weaker, southern one over the past few days. Both have their pros and cons:<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-04 071702-1738678631742.jpg">Right now, the southern system seems to be favored, which means that moisture might be a bit more limited. However, we'll likely be starting a little cooler with temperatures in the concerned areas. Any time the forecast hinges on a degree or two either way, there's going to be a lot of uncertainty, too. These are forecasts that likely change down to the wire. <h1>WHAT TO EXPECT</h1>Wednesday looks to start off cloudy, with the light rain and drizzle increasing from west to east. As that moisture gets pushed eastward temperatures will hold until a warm front passes through. Once that happens, temperatures should be too warm to freeze raindrops on contact. Many locations have a chance to pick up a glace to a quarter inch of ice. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/2025-02-04 07-23-47-1738679195265.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>BIGGEST CONCERN</h1>The Mid-Atlantic states into the DelMarVa Penninsula could see the highest totals. The higher the numbers, the more widespread affects could be, including loss of power. Roads could become slick with even a glaze of ice, so assume the roads will be dicey anywhere freezing rain is reported. Expect issues overnight Wednesday into Thursday, but the window might be short-lived in some places. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-04 072938-1738679392527.jpg">Of course, anytime we're talking about different precipitation types and mixing them together, it will all depend on the temperature profile of the atmosphere. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-04 073137-1738679507053.jpg">

The West Coast has gotten off to a hectic start this week! The same energy that is prompting the heavy rain and snow will move into the Plains later this week. What happens from there? It's still a little murky...Related: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/atmospheric-river-makes-an-appearance-this-weekend">Pineapple Express Roars Onshore</a>Starting with what we know, temperatures will be warm for many of us. That already has us thinking in a different direction than we normally are at the beginning of February. Could we have enough energy to work with from a severe aspect? The Storm Prediction Center--which tries to sniff out severe weather setups a few days in advance--even mentioned Sunday morning:<blockquote>"given what appears to be a pattern of inherently low predictability, delineating areas of severe-weather potential would appear imprudent."</blockquote><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Web 12-1738678133016.png">These impulses are fairly weak. Meaning that might not have enough kick to start robust thunderstorm activity. The Storm Prediction Center is watching the areas around the Mid-South on Wednesday for a tornado or two and damaging winds within some of the strongest storms.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Web 9-1738678163954.png">Wind and Tornado potential will be the biggest concern.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Web 14-1738679320064.png">Whether we have severe storms are not, there will be a good amount of available moisture that could be wrung out over the area. An excessive rainfall outlook has been issued for the area. A marginal excessive rainfall means, localized flooding is possible, mainly in areas that are known to experience rapid runoff with heavy rainfall.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Web 10 -1738678361989.png">Rainfall totals around 2-4" will be impacting this region. That is saying something for how fast this system is moving, there is a lot of moisture to be wrung out. Severe Storms Threaten the Mid-South Wednesday

A moderate to extreme intensity surge of atmospheric river (AR) moisture has been unleashing heavy precipitation in California. Another AR will approach the region toward the middle of the week with lower snow levels and widespread rainfall. What is an AR surge? It's extra moisture that is funneled into storm systems often making them wetter. AR events can generate flash flooding, mudslides, and feet of high mountain snowfall accumulation. The atmospheric river is sometimes referred to as the 'Pineapple Express' as it brings air from near the tropics (Hawaii) into the mid-latitudes.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Web 1-1738671354795.png">Rainfall totals have really been adding up. A couple of locations are reporting over a foot of rainfall in the last few days! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-03 190128-1738634494122.png">Localized flooding, landslides and mudslides have been reported, that will be insult to injury since these areas will pick up more rain today. Green Dots: Flood Reports Orange Dots: Landslide/mudslide Report <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/web 8-1738674818953.png">Areas along and north of I-80 can expect the heaviest precipitation, including heavy snow in the mountains. Tuesday afternoon some thunderstorm activity will be possible. Flooding Concerns and Heavy Sierra Snow in California Through Tuesday

The Pineapple Express is sending waves of heavy snow into Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. There are two additional storm systems through this upcoming weekend. Rich atmospheric moisture (from near Hawaii) gets picked up by the jet stream and then entrained into storm systems before being delivered to the West Coast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Tomer humidity AR 222025-1738527110672.jpg">Watch the timing:Feet of total accumulation is likely across the mountains of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. Look at some of totals that have come out of this firehose of moisture:<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-04 061245-1738674771933.jpg">With a little more on the way. Heavy Snow for Wyoming, Idaho & Montana This Week

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

The record-setting trend began on Sunday, as many locations across Texas and the Southwest saw their daily highs surpass record levels. On Monday, further records fell across much of the country. Earlier in the day, records began to fall across the Ohio River Valley. Cincinnati saw a record fall for the day that stood 142 years!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-03 191817-1738635503925.png">Texas once again got in on the act:<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-03 192007-1738635619064.png">One of the more notable records came out of Las Vegas, where the city felt its 2nd earliest 80° day on record.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-03 192032-1738635670899.png">Record-high temperatures will remain widespread through the rest of the week. Many record-warm overnight temperatures are expected as well.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-03 192140-1738635705964.png">SOUTHWESTHighs in the Southwest will continue to approach or surpass the 80s in the lower deserts (Sonoran). Everyone was eagerly awaiting the results as Phil emerged from his slumber this morning. Just before 7:30 AM ET he made his announcement: more winter! How surprising was it? Given the cloud cover present, it was a little surprising. This doesn't come as much of a surprise. Not great. Punxsutawney Phil Expecting 6 More Weeks of Winter

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

A pair of low-pressure systems will keep the country's northern tier under the threat of snow, wind, and cold temperatures. Areas across the Upper Midwest and Northern New England are expecting light to moderate snow, though some models have been trending toward a few areas of heavy snow and the potential of freezing rain for the windy city.<h2>Alerts and Timing</h2>Snow reports are coming in nearly 6" for spots in northeastern Minnesota. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-02 100930-1738516182223.jpg">Winter alerts have been issued around western Lake Superior through Sunday for heavy snow and gusty winds. Issues across Minnesota and Wisconsin will remain in place through midday Sunday, and South Dakota's winter Weather Advisory is for the second system that will bring impacts later today.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-02 100809-1738516104119.jpg">Snow will come in two waves - along the warm front and with a trailing low-pressure system within a stationary boundary. Areas around the Great Lakes will see snow continue into Sunday morning, where it will gradually clear Michigan by midday. The warm front snow will then track across New York and New England Sunday afternoon and evening.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Baron 2-1738467113199.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h3>Round 1:</h3><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Web 4-1738495816476.png"><h3>Round 2:</h3>New England will be hit with snow by Sunday evening and they will brace for round two into Monday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-01 111148-1738433608386.png">Snow in New York and New England is expected to be lighter, for most, but heavier in the mountains and in northern Maine. Areas east of Lake Ontario into the mountains of northern New York and New England could see 3-6 inches, while areas in northern Maine could surpass a foot.
