​A classic late-season April snowstorm is impacting the Rocky Mountains, bringing heavy snowfall to Utah, Colorado, and Arizona. Winter weather alerts remain in place, with some areas expecting over a foot of snow accumulation. Not only is the storm expected to bring heavy snowfall, but high winds will be possible, prompting Red Flag Warnings across much of New Mexico, as an area of low pressure swiftly dives down to the south.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-18 160200-1745014580444.png"><h1>Timing</h1>Snow is winding down across Wyoming, progressively moving south through this afternoon. By later this evening, snow will overspread much of northern New Mexico. By Saturday afternoon, this system will move into the plains, stirring up the severe weather threat, along with lingering snow across the High Plains.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/byesnow2-1745014741951.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Snowfall</h1>Through Saturday, the heaviest of the additional snow accumulation will fall across higher elevations, including the San Juans and the Front Range. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-18 162015-1745014868723.png">Temperatures have dropped rapidly across the Southwest as the system has dropped in. Fire season has started early for the Southwest and will remain active through June, or until the monsoon season brings relief. It has been abnormally dry so far. Unfortunately, this means that anytime the slightest breeze kicks up, the fire threat will accompany it. It has been so incredibly dry that until meaningful rain moves in, this will likely be the case. At least a .10" is enough to help the dry fuels at the surface, but even that doesn't look like it will come anytime soon.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-18 155751-1745013477119.png">Wildfire Ingredients:<ul><li>Warmer than normal temps</li><li>Dry fuels</li><li>Wind</li><li>Low relative humidity levels</li></ul><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-18 155828-1745013543606.png">Fire weather alerts will continue for parts of New Mexico and West Texas through Friday afternoon, as gusty winds and low relative humidity remain. Thankfully, humidity will increase Friday night into Saturday for much of New Mexico, improving conditions. However, further south, fire danger will remain. Dry Southwest Keeps Critical Fire Conditions in the Forecast

That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. Severe storms erupted Thursday evening across the Plains and Midwest, with multiple long track supercells producing tornadoes and massive hail in Nebraska and Iowa. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1913208389645291804" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1913208389645291804"></div> Two discrete supercells produced tornadoes north and south of Omaha Thursday evening, with damage tracking across state lines. One that moved from Douglas County, NE to Washington County, IA was rated as an EF-3. Here are the details from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/wx/afos/p.php?pil=PNSOAX&amp;e=202504182019">NWS Omaha's storm damage survey report</a>:<blockquote><pre><code>At approximately 6:55 PM CDT on Thursday, April 17, a tornado developed near Highway 133, and appeared to produce first damage by snapping limbs in an area of trees. The tornado moved to the east, impacting trees, homes, and destroying a garage near 108th Street. It damaged trees along Little Papillion Creek and then impacted a home and large garage near 84th Street, south of Dutch Hall Road. This was the point along the tornado track where the most intense damage was observed, as a well-built all-brick home was destroyed with only some walls still standing. Tree damage near the site, as well as the destruction of a large, well-built garage, supported the estimate of high-end EF-2 to low-end EF-3 damage at this location. The tornado proceeded to destroy another large shed, and remove the roof from a brick home a half mile to the east. It then destroyed a very large garage-type building in-between two homes at 78th Street south of Dutch Hall Road. The tornado passed directly between the homes, causing extensive tree damage, lifting and moving a full-size pickup truck approximately 30 yards, and throwing large trees nearly a quarter of a mile downstream. The tornado weakened slightly but damaged several outbuildings and trees near 72nd Street. At that point, it began to move more northeasterly, snapping several trees and flipping recreational vehicles at Nashville, NE. It directly impacted another home, destroying two outbuildings and causing tree damage near Country Road P38. The tornado impacted one more home and destroyed another outbuilding near Country Road P51 before dissipating in an open field at approximately 7:15 PM CDT. The tornado is rated an EF-3 with estimated maximum wind speeds based on damage of 140 mph, 0 fatalities and 0 injuries. The maximum track width was approximately 170 yards and the track length approximately 8.3 miles.</code></pre></blockquote><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-18 054213-1744976566300.png">Thankfully, no injuries or deaths have been reported from these storms, though multiple buildings were damaged. Tornadoes Hit Nebraska and Iowa Thursday Night

The jet stream remains active and stubborn in the country's midsection, creating rounds of storms that persist through Sunday. For Friday, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has a SLIGHT risk (level 2 out of 5) for severe storms. It is a large area, from southern Texas to the U.P. of Michigan! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-18 051921-1744975200026.png">Wind and hail are expected to be the most widespread hazards with these storms, with significant hail possible Friday and Saturday, primarily in western Texas and Oklahoma.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-18 051926-1744975212363.png">A few tornadoes are each possible as well, with a higher chance on Friday in Central Oklahoma and northern Texas. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-18 052539-1744975575763.png">On Saturday, gusty storms will linger along the front in the marginal risk in the Ohio Valley. In yellow, stronger storms will pop in the slight risk closer to a developing low pressure. By Easter Sunday, that low begins trekking to the north. SPC has now upgraded to a level 3 out of 5 (enhanced risk) in Missouri and Illinois following the path of the low. Severe weather is possible south from there along a cold front as it moves east. All modes of severe weather (wind, hail, and tornadoes) are expected, so follow WeatherNation for the latest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-18 141441-1745007296250.png"><h1>Flooding</h1>Along with the severe threat, flash flooding could be an issues in some of the areas from Oklahoma into the Ohio Valley. Over the next few days, some cities along the Interstate 44 corridor could receive between 3-6" of rain. On Saturday, a moderate risk of flooding has been issued along with a Flood Watch for these areas through Sunday!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/1-1745013879354.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/2-1745013884492.png">With multiple rounds of storms, multiple inches of rainfall will become a growing threat. Remember, the rivers have still not gotten all of the water downstream from the rain earlier this month.

Two upper level lows have brought a shot of cold air across the Northeast. Temperatures Wednesday AM were chilling for Illinois and Indiana. These chilly temperatures are going to continue to spread east. The mid-Atlantic will wake up to temperatures around 32° and or frost developing outside. This can be harmful to plants that have been planted especially since it has been a few weeks with warmer overnight temperatures. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Web 19-1744803212343.png">There are a few winter weather advisories that continue into Wednesday for a quick inch or two of snow and wind gusts upwards of 35 mph.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Winter Temps-1744803224940.png">The Northeast will spend the rest of the week digging out of this cool pocket and warming back up to seasonable levels and beyond. Cold Push for the Northeast

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!
