Severe storms and flood potential continue this weekend, thanks to a strong low-pressure system that is moving along the Gulf Coast to end the weekend. Storms packing large hail and damaging winds will be possible Sunday into the afternoon. Severe Storms Return to the South This Weekend

As we look at our southern neighbors bearing the brunt of intense heat, the upper-level ridging responsible will build further north into Texas over the coming days. Record highs fell across Deep South Texas. Cities like Brownsville, Harlingen, and McAllen experienced highs over 100 degrees Saturday. Behind the cold front (that brought us storms) we've fallen 20+ degrees in the past 24 hours! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741492928886.png">However, temperatures are expected to swing back into the 80s and 90s as head into the middle of next week!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741493059616.png">The warmth is spilling northward as well! Omaha will soar into the middle 70's by Monday! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741464997682.png">In fact, at this point, records look like they could fall Sunday and Monday across the Dakotas and Minnesota.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-09 044308-1741516993871.jpg">High temperatures in some arears can swing about 20-30° in a matter of days, especially as a cold front drops temperatures again toward the middle of the week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741493096973.png">

It is time! (No pun indented). Sunday, March, 9 marks the beginning of Daylight Saving. A little confused on which is, which? With Daylight Saving we "spring forward" by pushing the clocks forward an hour. At 2:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, digital clocks will jump ahead by one hour, providing an extra hour of daylight in the evening.&nbsp;If you have an analog clock do not forget to change it, the microwave, or the oven.While many people look forward to longer days and more sunlight, the transition can also lead to some confusion and disruptions, particularly in terms of sleep schedules (Can't Sleep catch us on WeatherNation all 24 hours). Here is what you need to know as we head into the start of Daylight Saving Time:<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-08 051923-1741436367533.jpg"><h1>What Is Daylight Saving Time?&nbsp;</h1>Daylight Saving Time is the practice of moving the clock forward by one hour during the warmer months to make better use of daylight. This shift typically begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November. The concept was originally proposed to reduce energy consumption by extending daylight hours.<h1>Why Do We Do It?&nbsp;</h1>The idea behind DST is simple: by shifting an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening, people have more daylight hours after work or school. This can encourage outdoor activities, reduce the need for artificial lighting in the evening (saving energy), and generally align active hours of the day with available sunlight.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-08 052028-1741436432226.jpg"><h1>Who Does Not Observe DST?&nbsp;</h1>While Daylight Saving Time is observed in most parts of the U.S., a few areas, including Hawaii and most of Arizona, do not participate in the time change. The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather. For college, Jesse attended the University of South Alabama where he received his degree in Broadcast Meteorology along with minors in Math and Geography. From Alabama, Jesse started his broadcast television working three years at KAVU-TV in Victoria. Recently, he finished a stint in Shreveport, LA. CALIFORNIA - Despite recent storm systems, California's snowpack remains below average (about 82% of average to date). As our latest system wraps up, California and Nevada did pick up an additional foot to two feet of snow. As we jump ahead to next week, the weather pattern will pick up for not only California but all of the Western United States.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741389153110.png">Starting Tuesday, we will see a huge influx of Pacific moisture moving into California and Southern Oregon that will lead to lots of rain and snow. Some of the early modeling is showing several feet of snow to fall across the Northern Sierra with lesser amounts father south. Lots of snow is also coming to the Northwest. Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Don't miss the total lunar eclipse this week - it will be the last for North America until 2029! The eclipse will happen very late Thursday night - technically Friday morning since totality will start after midnight. As the moon moves into the umbra, or the darkest shadow cast by the earth, it will turn a deep red hue due. This will happen starting around 1 am ET, but the red color will become much more noticeable around 2 am, with totality or the complete blood moon look, happening between 2:26 am and 3:31 am ET. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/2025-03-08 08-28-36-1741448546607.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Here's a look at how the moon will change from it's classic white to the dark red as it moves across Earth's shadow. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-08 084030-1741448509493.png">This Friday's eclipse is a "total" lunar eclipse, so designated because it passes through the darkest portion of Earth's shadow known as the umbra. While this earth shadow always present, it isn't too often that the moon moves directly through the darkest part.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-08 085447-1741449297753.png">During a partial lunar eclipse, the "umbra", or earth's hard shadow, doesn't fully cover the moon, only a portion. During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the earth only passes through the "soft" shadow of the moon, with the umbra completely missing the lunar surface.

In the last 24 hours, ski resorts across the Four Corners picked up some good snow from Thursday's storm system. While this system is already in the Great Lakes, there is a cutoff low in the Desert SW poised to deliver much need moisture in parts of the Four Corners tonight and Saturday!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741390519135.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741404005562.png"><h1>Forecast Timing:</h1>For the overnight, the upper low moves from Arizona into New Mexico. This will create some upslope flow and crank out some heavy snow in parts of Southeastern Colorado and northern New Mexico. By Saturday, the low pressure system slides into the Southern Plains to bring rain and snow chances across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Baron 2-1741404117631.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Through Sunday night, the heaviest amounts of snow will fall near the Colorado and New Mexico borders. The transition from Winter to Spring is often very windy and the next few days will be no exception. Where dry conditions exist, especially where drought is in place, fire danger will increase.<h1>Florida</h1> As a cold front exits the east coast on Thursday, dry and breezy conditions are leading to elevated fire danger in Florida, especially in Central Florida, where Red Flag Warnings are in effect (top of page). Winds are expected to be sustained around 15 - 25 mph this afternoon with stronger gusts.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-06 062354-1741267442699.png"> Southwest</h1>Coming off the heels of the critical fire threat in Texas and the Southwest earlier this week, the forecast shows another round of fire danger starting up on Thursday and continuing into Saturday. Another developing low will move from California into the Rockies before ejecting out into the Plains by the end of the week. Fire weather watches and warnings are up again for parts of West Texas and New Mexico.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741292488816.png">Winds will be quite strong, particularly in the afternoons through Saturday as multiple low pressure systems move from the mountains to the east.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Baron 2-1741292570626.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Moisture is much needed in this part of the country. However, drought continues to build in the Southwest, especially locations along the Rio Grande and Mexican border. As normal, try to avoid anything that can cause a spark for the end of the work week. Precipitation is expected in some of these fire prone areas from Thursday night into Saturday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/1-1741292745643.png">

A multi-vehicle crash shut down a portion of the New York State Thruway in Buffalo amid blizzard conditions on Tuesday, January 2. At least two people were injured, <a href="http://buffalonews.com/2018/01/02/eastbound-lanes-of-i-90-near-depew-closed-due-to-crash/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a news report said</a>.

Twenty-two vehicles were directly involved in the crash, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted following reports of 75 vehicles involved in the crash. Many other vehicles that were not directly involved in the crash were backed up on the highway, he tweeted.
