Severe weather has been easy to find it feels like over the past few weeks. It's in places you would typically expect, from the southern plains to the Deep South. Our next threat roars onshore Wednesday, which could bring severe thunderstorms to....THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST??<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 061056-1742904665726.jpg">That's right, areas around Seattle and Portland could be looking down a risk for damaging winds and large hail as storms develop Wednesday afternoon. So what's causing this?<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 062620-1742905628962.jpg">A powerhouse system will spin onshore, but it's coming on the heels of record-warm temperatures. That combination typically doesn't happen up here, especially not this early. The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded to a SLIGHT risk of severe weather that includes Seattle, Portland, and Spokane. This includes the threat of significant hail (larger than 2" in diameter) and an isolated tornado threat.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 124420-1742928563989.png">Storms look to get going in the afternoon and could bring large hail and damaging winds as they lift north.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/03-25 rnw 18z-1742955239464.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Heavy rainfall could lead to additional flooding in the Pacific Northwest. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. TEXAS - After an increase in drought conditions has overwhelmed the state of Texas, rain in the forecast is certainly needed, and rain is what we'll get. Unfortunately, the price of extensive drought and incoming rain is this risk for flash flooding. Drought-stricken soils often have a hard time retaining water quickly, which causes runoff and flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 173906-1742946329332.png">The Weather Prediction Center has issued excessive rainfall outlooks for Wednesday through Friday. The heaviest of this rain and storm event will come in Wednesday and Thursday, so there is a level 3, MODERATE, risk of flash flooding across southern and Gulf Texas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/ezgif-274294671f9293-1742946547603.gif">According to the WPC, rainfall totals may reach up to 5-10", but localized amounts may reach amounts upwards of 10-15". Given the environment we are looking at, rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour are a possibility.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 201446-1742958037850.png">Later Wednesday afternoon and into the evening, a heavy rainfall event is likely to move over southern Texas. The soils may quickly become overwhelmed with the amount of rain in these areas increasing the flood threat. Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

A strong area of high pressure has taken over the West, which means warm-to-hot temperatures are in effect for this portion of the country. Record warmth is in full swing, and multiple records were broken throughout the south and west. Shreveport, LA, set a new record with 91°, beating out the old record of 89°. Death Valley and Indio, CA, are no strangers to the heat, but records were broken in these cities as temperatures dug into the 100s on Tuesday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/RECORD HGIGF-1742952992785.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/RECORDDSSS-1742952932334.png">Over the next few days, the West is on track to see dozens of records tied or broken. Here's a look at where records can be broken through Thursday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/rerr-1742953129616.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Forecast Highs</h1>The above-average temps will stick around through Thursday before temps get cooler for some folks. Las Vegas, which normally averages 74° for this time of year, will see a high forecast of 90° on Wednesday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/phoenidddd-1742953216323.png">The Pacific Northwest will see temperatures over 20 degrees above average for some. Cities in this region will climb into the 70s and a few into the 80s. Boise normally sees a high of 57°, but on Wednesday the forecast high is 81°! Temps will drop back down on Thursday and Friday for this region.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/weddd-1742953286576.png">The Northern Rockies could see rapid snowmelt through next week as high temperatures climb to more than 20° above average. Billings, Cheyenne, and Rapid City are all expected to climb into the 70s.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/jfjfjfs-1742953323274.png">If you plan to spend time outdoors, especially when venturing farther away from cities on a hike or similar, be sure to bring plenty of water, take breaks in the shade, and wear loose, light-colored clothing.

NORTHWEST - Warmer air is forcing the rain/snow line (freezing level) in the Pacific Northwest and Northern Tier up to higher elevations. Rain and melting snow will increase the avalanche risk in the High Cascades, volcanoes, and mountains of British Columbia, Idaho, and Montana. These are sometimes referred to as 'wet avalanches'. Portland, Miami, Dallas, Minneapolis, and Richmond are just a few cities with thunderstorm potential today. We're getting back into the Spring swing of things! Temperatures have certainly felt Spring-like recently but it will look, and sound (maybe smell) even more like it with baseball returning!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 103855-1742921940390.jpg">With many first pitches set to be tossed in the afternoon, many forecasts look like home runs. There are just a few exceptions that might put a damper on the ceremonial day. The biggest concern might come from the Midwest on Thursday. A warm front lifting north could provide enough of a focus to spark some fireworks.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 104102-1742921924109.jpg">Damaging winds and large hail will be the biggest concerns with any storms that develop Thursday afternoon. Kansas City, St. Louis, and Chicago will all need to keep an eye to the sky.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 103751-1742922110640.jpg">Other areas that will need a poncho thankfully sport indoor stadiums in Arlington and Houston. Seattle might also sport a closed roof for the season opener with rain in the forecast. Drought development is likely across the central and southern Great Plains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-20 101939-1742488289405.png"> Widespread major flooding is not expected this spring across the CONUS, and significantly reduced flood risk exists over much of the United States, given above average temperatures, combined with well below average snowpack over the Northern Plains, Midwest, and Ohio Valley. The reduced flood risk could lead to low flow impacts on navigation and saltwater intrusion on the Lower Mississippi River during the late summer and fall. This is the fourth year in a row with this risk.Despite the overall reduced flood risk this spring, moderate flooding is expected in tributaries to the Lower Missouri River in Kansas and Missouri. This area typically experiences moderate flooding each spring, and despite the lack of snowpack, local antecedent conditions and typical spring rainfall will lead to the likelihood of moderate flooding on these tributaries.Current water supply forecasts in the western United States indicate much below normal conditions for the Desert Southwest due to below average snowpack.In Alaska, spring ice breakup and snowmelt flood risk is forecast to be above average for the Upper Yukon, Tanana, and Koyukuk River basins. Below average flood risk is expected in the Lower Yukon and Kuskokwim River basins, along with most of Southcentral Alaska.Based on the expected spring flood outlook, hypoxia development in the Gulf of America and Chesapeake Bay is projected to not deviate from seasonal normals. Hypoxic zones directly impact commercial and recreational fisheries."
