Looking ahead to next week, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a severe weather outlook on Tuesday of next week (March 4). A strong jet stream (fast-moving air high up in the atmosphere) will cause lift and shear across the deep south, causing significant changes in weather patterns. As of now the SPC has cities like includes Little Rock, Memphis, and Greenville in the 30% chance for severe weather. Eventually, the threat will continue on Wednesday with the threat of all modes of severe weather.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-28 052601-1740745610643.jpg"><h1>SET-UP</h1>This storm system is expected to develop early in the week, around Monday. A strong wave of energy will move inland from the Pacific coast, traveling across the southern Rocky Mountains. By midweek, this system will accelerate toward the east-northeast. As it moves, it could cause the development of a significant low-pressure area over parts of the central U.S..<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/2025-02-28 05-47-17-1740746877122.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Other factors that will contribute to the severe weather include, increasing Moisture from the Gulff. Dew point will be in the 70s for portions of the Gulf Coast ahead of this front. Additional factors like warming temperatures will also cause the clash of air masses that usually bring us severe weather in the month of March. The warm weather and moisture will meet up with a robust trough, igniting thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/ezgif-8a4ef4685757ac-1740598574210.gif">When the SPC issues these outlooks this far in advance, it does signify a higher confidence in storms following through. There is already an outlook issued for next Wednesday, as the storms will continue to push east. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Meteorological Spring is almost here, the first day begins this Saturday, March 1! The meteorological seasonal calendar is based on the annual temperature cycle, so meteorologists and climatologists break the seasons down into groupings of three months. Statistically speaking, meteorological winter, December - January - February, is the coldest time of the year. We wanted to look back at our most significant weather events of this winter season.<h2>Drought Monitor</h2>When we compare the drought monitor from the beginning of meteorological winter to the end, certain areas stand out. The southwestern U.S. saw worsening drought whereas the Mid-south U.S. saw improvements to the drought monitor. This is what was to be expected, especially as we remain in a La Niña pattern.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/ezgif-37a1bccc7ea81c-1740620901634.gif"><h2>Southern California Wildfires</h2>A series of catastrophic wildfires developed in Los Angeles County on January 7, 2025 and continued through January 31, 2025. 14 destructive wildfires affected southern California after worsening drought conditions, low humidity, dry vegetation, and strong Santa Ana winds.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-26 184055-1740621082254.jpg"> The largest fires in southern California included the Eaton Fire, which burned a total of 14,021 acres and destroyed over 9.4k+ structures. The Palisades Fire burned a total of 23,707 acres and destroyed over 6.8k structures. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-26 184101-1740622026400.jpg">Unfortunately, the weather leading up to these fires was one of the biggest causes of such destruction. Coming off of a season that featured 18 named storms and 5 Gulf Coast landfalls, it helps to know that the forecasts are improving. The National Hurricane Center takes a look back at how their forecasts fared each year. They always want to improve their ability to warn those in the path of a tropical system and how strong it ultimately will be. In tropical terms, there's a whole host of ways to dissect one, but the two that will be the same with every storm are path and intensity.<h1>PATH</h1>When the NHC is talking about a "path" verifying, they're not looking at every step along its lifetime, but where it makes landfall relative to the forecasted spot. This past year was the best in history since they started tracking the measure in 1990!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Track Error-1740489659585.jpg">The track error has continued to decrease in the past decade. Of course, when looking at the 3 vs 5 day forecasts, the farther out in time you get, the more error there will be. Since the turn of the century, the NHC track error 5 days out has been cut in half! In 2024, they were only off a little over an average of 100 nautical miles. Some forecasts ended up within a matter of a few miles 5 days after being issued. They actually have an issue explaining what all goes into the process:<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RB1mTkgkI5E" start="0"></iframe></div>Path forecasting has become a specialty of the National Hurricane Center. What can be a little tougher? The intensity...<h1>INTENSITY</h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-25 051407-1740490195235.jpg">The trend has continued to decrease since the turn of the century. The error in intensity has been improving. However, when a system rapidly intensifies, that's where the forecast can bust. But as we've seen far too many times in recent memory, storms that gain 35+ mph in a 24-hour period are hard to predict with a lot of certainty. 2024 alone had 34 instances of rapid intensification (!), which they say led to a slightly above average intensity error compared to last year. Forecast models that using data from the Hurricane Hunters can help. Many times those that are using more complicated physics can help identify systems that could rapidly intensify. But they come with their biases as well. The trust has increased to the level that before Helene formed, the initial forecast called for a majhor hurricane within a 72-hour period. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Rapid Intensification bias-1740490412554.jpg">Now is the time to get your supplies ready and fortify plans for the upcoming hurricane season. The season is quickly approaching, but as it does, we have some of the best and brightest on the guard for any tropical trouble.

GREAT LAKES to NORTHEAST - Another fast-moving system, known as a "clipper", will bring unsettled weather to the Great Lakes, Midwest, Northeast, and New England through the weekend. With northerly winds drawn in behind our last clipper, temperatures look to drop below freezing as we round out the week and head into the weekend. This could favor better snow chances with this next system. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-27 051430-1740658586985.png">Colder air starts to take over the forecast for cities like Chicago and Cleveland this weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-27 205241-1740714773485.png">Here is a look at the latest guidance for our snowfall chances. Many spots in New England look cool enough Friday night and into Saturday to see snowfall. Boston in this round will likely see snow before sunrise, and then transition to rain.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/clippy-1740714897487.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Precipitation Totals</h2>Precipitation totals do not look overly impressive, but it is enough to bring slight disruptions and delays to your day. The heaviest snowfall will be in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Tug Hill Plateau, Adirondacks, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Berkshires of Massachusetts. Another Clipper System Across the Northeast Friday

After bitterly cold temperatures not that long ago, above-average temperatures continue to dominate central portions of the country. Residents across our northern states felt temperatures climb into the 50s on Wednesday, while further south, St. Louis and Wichita reached the 70s. There will remain some lovely days ahead to get out and enjoy! Spring-Like Temperatures for Now, Colder Air Next Week

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Exciting times are returning for stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts! The second of two planetary alignments will happen in a span of 40 days. This time instead of six planets, we'll be treated to SEVEN! Naked eye observers can expect to see four planets during each event, but adding binoculars or a telescope will help you see the rest. Planetary alignment--when planets are on the same side of the sun and appear to line up in the night sky--is happening again Friday. While the planets always appear to form a line, seeing several planets visible to the naked eye doesn't happen every year. Planets of the solar system have differing orbital periods so it can take a while for several to appear together. For example, Mercury takes 88 days to orbit the sun while Jupiter takes about 12 years.<h1>February Alignment</h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/01/Screenshot 2025-01-19 084957-1737302067137.png">Like the alignment that happened last month, four of the planets will be visible to the naked eye (Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars), while the others will require a tool to help you (binoculars or a telescope). For viewers in North America, trying to see the planets in the days leading up to the 28th will likely produce the best viewing. In order to see Saturn during this alignment, you'll need to be ready as the sun goes down since it will be close to the sun and horizon. While Mercury can be viewed at times without an optical zoom, it will likely need it in this alignment due to its proximity to the sun.

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

Conditions over the past few days have been relatively quiet across the west coast. However, the pattern is expected to become increasingly active this weekend as a low-pressure system moves onshore. This will bring multiple rounds of precipitation, increasing the chances of rain and snow on Saturday, not only for the Northwest but also farther south into California.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/carain-1740690977538.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>As of now, rain totals look lighter inland, but we could see up to .50"-1.00" localized along the coast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot 2025-02-27 065357-1740664474223.jpg">Higher elevations will see the heaviest snowfall totals. Rain and Snow Return to the West Coast This Weekend

This winter season has been anything but normal for Colorado. A mild and dry winter has Coloradans excited for the upcoming snow Sunday.

So far in the the city of Denver, just over 7 inches of snow has fallen so far this entire winter season...that's nearly 2 feet below normal!
